Brain boost: why we need to know more about brains, brain health and brain science

This week is Brain Awareness Week and researchers from Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) are joining the global campaign to increase public understanding of our beautiful brains, the conditions that affect them and the research into conditions that affect the brain and nervous system.

NeuRA’s Chief Executive Officer and Institute Director, Professor Matthew Kiernan, AM, is also President of the Brain Foundation. Professor Kiernan is a distinguished clinical academic and scientist renowned for his expertise in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly motor neuron disease (MND) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). They can discuss Brain Awareness Week, why brains are amazing and the research that will change prevention, diagnosis and treatment of brain conditions.

NeuRA has been at the forefront of neuroscience for more than 30 years, with research into areas including dementia, mental health, spinal cord injury, falls prevention, pain and road safety. NeuRA is also home to world-class facilities including the Sydney Brain Bank, Brain Mapping Facility and NeuRA Imaging.
